The concept of flourishing enterprises, which aims to harmonize profitability with social and environmental value, is rooted in the stakeholder theory developed in the 1980s by scholars like R.E. Freeman. This approach aligns corporate strategies with the needs of diverse stakeholders, thereby balancing economic goals with environmental and social dimensions. The movement toward flourishing enterprises was further advanced by prominent universities, notably Case Western Reserve University, through the work of David Cooperider and Chris Laszlo, who pioneered the Appreciative Inquiry model to foster organizational change and sustainability. Institutions such as Stanford and Harvard also contributed to this evolution, integrating flourishing principles into research and curricula that emphasize well-being, systemic sustainability, and positive organizational behaviour.
